Hemel Hempstead with family

So here I am in Hertfordshire, in Hemel Hempstead to be precise, with my sister Lyn and husband of 64 years Norman. What a beautiful part of the world with the loveliest outlook from their lounge over the garden and surrounding countryside. Usually, there are a number of Red Kite soaring above, making quite piercing shrieking sounds. They look so graceful as they glide past the window, enjoying their evening hunting.
We had a marvellous day out at Henry Moore's garden and exhibition. I certainly learnt a lot about this incredible, prolific artist, so famous throughout the world. First stop was the maquette studio where he made miniatures before starting on the final sculptures.
Then the Yellow Brick studio where he worked on many of his sculptures. When he died, the unfinished ones were left there as they had been at that time. We were told that polystyrene and plaster of Paris are both used in the making of these masterpieces.
Here are some of my favourites - above the Double Oval and below Three piece reclining figure.
of course, the highlight was undoubtedly the large reclining figure.
This magnificent work-of-art, perched on a hill in the sheep paddock, is the largest if his works. It can be seen from far away and seems to be guarding the entire collection as it looks over the surrounding hectares.
The Arch was also fabulous. I was told that they hold many weddings in the gardens and that this is a favourite spot for the ceremony! I can well imagine that.
Not only are the gardens fantastic and the sculptures brilliant, but the food and restaurant area were also worthy of mention.
It was a great visit to spend time with my sister and her husband.
