Epernay, champagne city 10.05

What a great way to spend the last day in Reims and the region. We had really seen most of the central city and knew our way around well.
Included in our pass was a train trip to the little town of Épernay, 45 minutes away. It was a beautiful trip, through rolling hills, either covered in forest or vineyards.  Lots of workers out there preparing the vines for summer.
What! Another church? Well, this was so different with the stunning colours of the Rose stained glass window behind me, reflecting the most vibrant colours onto the grey concrete and the little chairs... really magical.
the most  notable street in this town is without doubt the Rue du Champagne, where most of the big Champagne houses have a castle or mansion devoted to promoting their goods.  Some like Perrier have museums in former castles, this one being the museum of wine of Champagne région and regional archaeology. Very interesting place and fabulous gardens.
a lesser known champagne but memorable statue.
Moet et Chandon had a number of massive buildings, including this rather elite courtyard.. prices were just a bit out of our reach!
In the afternoon we took the train to Ay, a very pretty, sleepy village, with some wonderful shop windows ,
the village being surrounded by hills and vines. Many well known and lesesser known champagnes.  Our main visit here was to Pressoria, a multi sensorial museum taking you through step by step the making of this world renowned drink. Through fantastic films, sound, feel and finally a tasting, everyone left very much more knowledgeable than when they entered.

It was a hot day, so what better than a few kilometres along the Marne canal, perfectly turquoise, and very clean.
So much mistletoe above, but nobody to kiss!
Our destination was the little canal village of Mareuil- sur- Ay. Memories of only one week ago when we were still on board Barge Luciole. I have seen and experienced so much in that short time. Travel offers so much learning. I love that.
It was getting hotter, so we decided to have a refreshing cider from the Ardennes. Mmmm, délicieux. I loved the glasses. So easy to hold.

It had been great to catch up with my friend Pam, who I got to know about 50 years ago in Wengen. Incredible how the years fly by..Home to Reims for the final night and a tasty platter of cold meats, salad and cheese..
Fantastic holiday
