Clamecy, Nivernais canal day 1 29.04

Let the dream begin. Since 2016 I have dreamt of a small cruise in France but always decided it was too expensive. Now at last I am on my way. Leaving a hotel adjacent to this luxurious square, home of the Ritz Hotel and fancy cars,
We drove three hours south, past lush green fields and also fields of golden rape. Not an olive tree in sight. That's what makes travelling in Europe so special - everything changes so quickly - people, language, vegetation, food, wine, etc!
dark clouds loomed and ten minutes from our first sighting of Barge Luciole the heavens opened. I was sure it would stop by the time we arrived, and it did !
Barge Luciole was moored in the cute little town of Clamecy. What a great welcome we had from the team of 7 staff for 11 guests. Kir and delicate canapes on the deck of the boat ensured a fabulous start .
I couldn't wait to explore this sleepy little town, apparently considered a city before COVID. Now many have left but some are starting to return. Certainly it has to be one of the cheapest places to buy a house. Some were advertised at 30,000 euros, but in poor state. A perfect place for a builder!
the once grand hotel is pretty empty and I certainly would not fancy being in the top floor of the building on the left in the background.
This house was so pretty, but delapidated.
What a first evening we had. The four- course gourmet meal with specially chosen red and white wine was beyond my greatest expectations.
Outside, the sun set over Clamecy. I loved how many times the colours of the sky changed. It was stunningly beautiful.
It is going to be an incredible 6 days, even if weather forecast is not so good.
