The Welsh Coast

With the heatwave now behind us, we could enjoy cooler days and long midday walks along the truly magnificent Welsh Coast., The skies are a little overcast and there are occasional showers - normality returns!
Annie and I had some great days together visiting some areas I had not really explored much before.
Our first day was in Porthcawl, a holiday town with fabulous coastal walks and views towards Devon and Cornwall across the Bristol Channel. The town itself is a bit run down but the blustery walk along the cliffs was wonderful.

Next day we retraced our steps and got off at Newton, to walk through scrub to the lovely golden sands of Porthcawl beach, with the backdrop of dunes, and then to the Ogmore River. From there we went up river with its fantastic salt marshes to Candlestone, where we planned to follow a path back to Newton but ended up heading up to the top of the Merthyr Mawr dunes with breathtaking views over the different areas we had visited.

First, these beautiful dunes with their golden sand. It really reminded me of one of my favourite Christchurch walks at Brighton Spit.

The beach is mostly sandy but with areas of limestone pavement and rock, similar to parts of Kaikoura.

What a marvelous sight it was to see a large group of horsetrekkers riding down this massive beach at low tide. How I would love to ride again!

The water was a perfect temperature. What a shame we didn't have our swimming togs.

As we turned the corner to walk up the Ogmore River banks, I was enthralled not only by the landscape but also the wonderfully colourful pebbles and rocks on the sand. Nature's artworks.

Wow, it was like walking up the Punakaiki River on the West Coast, apart from the vegetation behind being totally different. The river and rocks brought back brilliant memories of camping at Punakaiki and spending time by the mouth of the Punakaiki.

Just round the corner the river meanders its way through these magnificent and quite unique salt marshes.

What a great day out. 15 kilometres of amazing and diverse scenery.
