Cagliari

I am not a great lover of cities, but Cagliari was small enough to get round easily from our appartment in the centre. Probably the most memorable thing for me was  the unbelievable colour  and size of the wisteria trees here. What magnificent splashes of purple they provided at monuments, roundabouts and tree-lined streets.

Here next to the Bastione.was possibly the most photographed wisteria in Sardinia, if not the world! (See above)
Looking down from one of the main entrances to the old city, we had a birdseyeview of the port area and the road we would later take to Chia.

Piazza Costituzione is an extremely impressive staircase leading to the terrace of the Bastione. We looked up at the stairs and once more determined we would not climb up in the heat. However, as in Bosa, we found a much less demanding slope partially in shade, and up we went. Thankfully! Fabulous views and undoubtedly the start of the real old city.

In the old city there are so many run-down buildings for sale along with many presumably historic walls which, just as in Christchurch, they hope
 one day to rebuild.

In the midst of a mix of derelict homes and luxuriosly renovated appartments there are besutiful piazzas, quiet as I took this photo, but humming later over lunch time.

Italian weddings are brilliant affairs with plenty of pomp and ceremony, particularly if couples marry in the cathedral of Santa Maria in Cagliari. We were lucky enough to be there before and after the ceremony.

It is a pity I could not insert a video here to capture the incredible noise from these super enthusiastic guests. Maybe the groom was a local footbll star, member of a choir, whatever, there was plenty of football style yelling! It was great. The dresses were fabulous and shoes downright unbelievable considering the cobble stones! The gentlemen looked so smart and handsome.  I felt so sorry for the photographer trying to control this mob of excited guests.

Peace again in the lower streets of Cagliari, still so colourful but empty as it was a public holiday.

Choosing which beach to go to is probably the biggest challenge. East or Wesr, the coast is indented with dozens of beautiful bays and beaches. We headed west to Chia, recommended by my friend Fred. What a perfect recommendation. The 40 minute drive was partly through an area of shallow salt swamps, a perfect habitat for flamingo. Fantastic. I had really wanted to see these wonderful creatures.
We couldn't stop beside the ponds but in Chia we saw another pair, in the distance.

What a wonderful beach with a nature reserve beside it and mountains all around.

It was marvelous to find a beach on a public holiday which was not crowded. We went later in the day, so this helped. Water was so refreshing.
Our final meal there was cheap and reallt tasty at a local pizzeria recommended by our hostess. 14 dollars bought us each a massive, delicious pizza, huge mixed salad, red wine and water. Great value for money.
