Myvatn to Akureyri

This will be a very short blog today as we covered only 100 kilometres and spent much of that time driving through wet and wintery weather, with temperatures around 6 degrees. Forecast was for snow where we stopped to see Goda Foss.

I had visited before on a fine day but nevertheless wanted to walk up on the other side of the river despite the steady rain. It was actually fine going up, and I really enjoyed looking at the falls hurtling down into the river below, but going back was a different story, with biting hail coming from the river side. Not in the slightest bit pleasant and a real soaking!

By the time I arrived back at the cafe where I had left Trudi, I was drenched! Never mind. It is easy to strip off and start again. Great they now have such fantastic new toilets there. I loved the signs. Not sure I saw anyone matching the looks of the sculptures entering either of the toilet areas!

It was a pity we couldn't see the landscape so well on the trip to Akureyri. I had seen it before, but Trudi had not.

Anyway, we arrived safely in Akureyri, Iceland's second biggest town, and easily found our lovely guesthouse Hvithusid, just at the moment that the owner's cat arrived bearing the gift of a pretty little bird! Poor owner. She was so embarrassed!

I am so impressed by the accommodation so far. The rooms are mostly modern but also a little quirky. I love this idea for hanging space!

It was fortunately dry in the afternoon, so good to visit the botanical gardens and see many of the plants we had seen en route plus others, like these magnificent saxifrages.

This type of poppy has caught my eye before on the trip around the island. It is such a stunning colour.

A walk through the old town brought back wonderful memories of my visit here during the cruise  on the Albatross. It was great not to have to rush around, giving more time to notice small things, like rather unusual letter boxes!

It was a pretty restful afternooon followed by a huge plate of fresh fish and chips and a visit to a local bar. Shame Iceland is not playing soccer tonight - it would have been an incredible atmosphere!
